Our Projects
Empowering Women
The adult literacy class mostly serves adult women who come to learn to read and write, which has led to women starting businesses in the community; women valuing/supporting their own kids' education; and women with more control over their family finances. In addition, the library attendance for children is roughly 40% female, and our student sponsorship has been roughly 75% female!
Education & Outreach
Shed a Light founders provide valued time and energy to educate their community. Since 2014, building a nursery school is one of our accomplishments. This school now offers children a space to learn and study who before, were studying under a tree. Most recently, members of the community, including youth, have constructed a library as a safe place to learn and study. The library has two full time teacher who tutor children who have lacked education during COVID-19.
Community Development
When members of Shed a Light are not working or helping their own families, they are bettering their second family, the community. These volunteers help families with home reconstruction and offer tutoring. Although these tasks take time and money, Shed a Light members are invested in empowering the community and delivering support the community members in need. We see every challenge as an opportunity, and this initiative helps ensure a better tomorrow for all community members, one at a time.
Feeding Program
The library now serves a free lunch to 50+ kids a day, six days a week. These kids would otherwise have to miss lunch.
Computer Class
Shed A Light had 11 computers generously donated and began a computer class for the community in 2023. The class focuses on fundamentals of computers, Microsoft Office, and direct applications, including tracking crop yields with Excel, writing resumes and essays with Word, and connecting this community with the digital world
